Age is “snow” barrier for adventurous 80-year-old resident at Ashbrook Court

A well-travelled, former fisherman checked another adventure off his list after experiencing the thrill of a ski slope thanks to the team at a Waltham Abbey care home.

Despite never having skied before, Peter was eager to try the activity as soon as he saw others on the slopes during a recent group trip to a nearby ski slope organised by the team.

The trip to the Hemel Hempstead Snow Centre was initially planned as a relaxing visit to a slope-side log cabin café, where residents could enjoy the atmosphere and watch skiers glide down the slopes.

However, Peter, who has travelled the world, couldn’t resist the temptation to get in on the action.

“I am always up to doing something new and different,” said 80-year-old Peter.

“I’ve never done skiing before, so I was surprised to learn that even though I use a wheelchair, they could get me into a sled and take me down the slope.

When a member of the team at the ski slope overheard Peter’s enthusiasm, they immediately offered to make it a reality.

Within an hour of their arrival, Peter was fitted into a sled, accompanied by expert assistance, and glided down the ski slope.

“It was quite exciting! I wasn’t nervous because everyone seemed to know what they were doing, and I appreciate them for making it happen.”

The team at the 70-bed home, which provides residential, nursing and dementia care, was thrilled to create the unforgettable experience for Peter.

Peter, who has a son and granddaughter living in Germany, received praise from both the team and fellow residents for his adventurous spirit, proving that age is no barrier to new experiences.

Care home manager Jonathane Ribeiro added: “Our mission is to make the wishes and dreams of our residents come true.

“It’s not just about meeting their care needs but ensuring they continue to live full, meaningful lives.

“Peter’s ski slope adventure is a perfect example of how we aim to create unforgettable experiences for everyone in our care.”
