What is Dementia Care?
We understand that for many people, a dementia diagnosis changes things not just practically, but emotionally. At Ashbrook Court, our purpose-built care home in Waltham Abbey, we understand the emotional impact on families. Our approach to dementia care is rooted in empathy and a deep respect for the person at the heart of it all. We get to know each resident, their story, their preferences, what brings them comfort and what brings them joy and we build their care around that. Our highly trained dementia care team supports residents around the clock, ensuring every resident feels valued, and truly understood.
This expert support extends to families and friends, with our team on hand to update relatives and offer advice at any time. Every month, our Memory Café brings families and community carers together in a relaxed, welcoming space, for coffee and conversation, amongst people who truly understand.
Care that promotes Hobbies and Interests
We believe that dementia should never stand in the way of enjoying the things you love. Residents are fully supported to live in the moment and enjoy a range of daily activities. At Ashbrook Court, gentle routines and thoughtfully planned dementia activities bring a reassuring rhythm to each day, quietly reducing anxiety and creating moments of calm and connection.
Our team takes time to get to know each resident, their history, their passions, the songs that make them smile and the hobbies that have shaped their life. This understanding becomes the foundation of everything. Activities are carefully adapted so that everyone can take part, whatever their ability, helping residents reconnect with lifelong interests while naturally supporting memory, movement, and confidence.
Each week we also explore new and varied places of interest on our private minibus, from local tea rooms to historical sites, helping residents stay active, engaged and connected with the community.

Namaste
Care
Namaste Care is a gentle, multi-sensory therapy where residents can relax, connect and simply be. The lights turn down low, soft music drifts through the room, the space settles into stillness, and our Namaste Care sessions begin. The outside world falls away, gentle touch, soothing aromatherapy, and familiar sounds come together to create something truly special, creating an immersive experience that stirs the senses and brings moments of deep calm and connection. Sessions are delivered one-to-one or in small groups, with every detail personalised. Sessions relax and reconnect people to memories with residents experiencing comfort and pleasure. Residents visibly calm, smile and engage, reconnecting with memories and emotions that might otherwise feel out of reach.

Understanding Dementia
Everyone’s lived experience of dementia is unique. That’s why we learn each resident’s life story, preferences and personality, to build trusting relationships that support both them and their families. We take time to understand each person, recognising the reasons behind behaviours and responding thoughtfully to their needs. This understanding, means we know how to calm, comfort, reassure, gently distract and meaningfully engage residents in ways that feel natural and reassuring. This approach enables us to respond to the unique challenges of dementia with compassion and skill.
How does Dementia Care Work?
We recognise that every person is different, and we treat them that way. Care is shaped around who your loved one is as an individual — their life story, their preferences, what brings them comfort, or causes distress. Our team is trained to gently explore what might be behind unsettled behaviour, so they can respond with the right kind of support at the right time.
We regularly review and adapt our approach as needs change, and we work closely with families and healthcare professionals to make sure nothing is missed. Over time, familiar faces, consistent routines, and a calm environment all help to reduce anxiety and bring a sense of security and reassurance.
We understand that choosing the right care home for a loved one can be one of the most difficult and important decisions anyone has to make. We recommend first shortlisting homes that meet the level of care and support your loved one needs now and also in the future, before arranging visits. Speak to friends and healthcare practitioners for recommendations too. Our guide will help you navigate your care journey with ease.
When caring for someone living with dementia, simple changes can make a big difference. Whilst names or events may become hard to recall, the feelings associated with a loved one or a treasured memory, may remain. Reminisce about happy times spent together, or current news and events that link to their interests.
You can help a person living with dementia by:
- Chatting about the weather, food, family and pets
- Using props to connect with them – share a favourite photo, or a story, a song
- Not asking them to remember, they can’t
- Validating their feelings, not correcting them
- Helping them identify what they need if they are upset
- Reassuring them with a hug, or holding their hand
- Engaging them by singing a song or asking for their help with a daily task
