Our Approach To Care

At Ashbrook Court we support our residents to lead meaningful lives, full of dignity and respect, no matter their age or health needs. Our care includes physical, emotional, social, spiritual, and practical support to live well.

This holistic approach extends throughout our residents’ lives with us, from the moment they move in to the days after they have passed away. We ensure their wishes are met, and the care delivered at the end of their life is dignified, aligned to their values and as comfortable as possible.

Guided by the knowledge of our residents’ needs and wishes, we work seamlessly with GPs, hospice partners and other healthcare professionals to avoid unnecessary hospital admissions. We provide thoughtful bedside activities such as art therapy, gentle massage, pampering and pet therapy, as well as spiritual support from faith and community leaders.

Palliative Care at Ashbrook Court

At Ashbrook Court, we support residents living with serious or progressive illnesses, from diagnosis through treatment and beyond. Our focus is on the whole person; easing pain, managing symptoms, and nurturing a sense of comfort and calm in daily life. We believe that living well is possible at every stage, and we are deeply committed to making that a reality for each precious person in our care.

We consider it a true honour to be part of our residents’ life journeys. Our team of skilled carers and registered nurses bring not only clinical expertise, but genuine compassion, offering reassurance and comfort to residents, and a steady, guiding presence for their families too.

Namaste Care

Imagine soft light, calming scents, familiar music and a loving touch, combined with family photos on the wall, or a sky full of stars projected across the ceiling. This is Namaste Care — and at Ashbrook Court, it’s a key aspect of our palliative care.

Internationally recognised but rarely found in UK care homes, Namaste Care is a deeply personal sensory experience, delivered with love and affection in the privacy of a resident’s own room. Using gentle massage, aromatherapy, calming music, and soft lighting, our team creates something truly unique for each person.

It supports to reduce anxiety, increase relaxation and promote more restful sleep – offering peace, connection, and a sense of feeling truly cared for.

How Does Palliative & End of Life Care Work?

Palliative care is round the clock, professional care that supports those living with long-term or chronic illness. It is an approach that considers the whole person, looking at an individual’s quality of life and wellbeing, not just their physical symptoms. It focuses on helping residents with serious or chronic illnesses such as cancer, heart failure, COPD, or neurodegenerative diseases to continue to live well.

Palliative care will address physical needs, including pain and symptom management and emotional and social needs to maintain dignity and reduce anxiety and will fully involve and support families. Personalised care plans, discussed with residents and their families, will also consider spiritual needs that recognise individual values, cultural beliefs and preferences.

End of life care is specifically for the final months, weeks and days of life when care approaches are focused on comfort and dignity, supporting individuals and their families at this difficult time.

Palliative care can be given at any stage of a serious illness, and can span the final years, months or days of someone’s life. It is often recommended when someone’s condition isn’t responding to medical treatment, or when symptoms or discomfort begin to impact their daily life.

It can be introduced as soon as the need for symptom relief or emotional support arises. Care can be delivered alongside other medical or complementary therapies, such as Namaste Care. While palliative care does not aim to cure, in our experience it can greatly enhance quality of life and provides comfort and support at this time.

We are available to chat to you in more detail about our palliative care services, and the activities and support we provide at Ashbrook Court. Alternatively, you can speak to your GP who should be able to tell you about palliative care services in your local area. This may include support from district nurses and access to specialists, therapists or equipment. If your loved one is in a hospital, hospice or a care home, you can speak to their care team about the palliative care services available.

Choosing the right care home is one of life’s most important decisions. Speak to your GP, friends and family for recommendations. When visiting potential homes, it’s useful to consider:

  • What training the team receives
  • What types of care the home provides such as nursing, residential and dementia care
  • Whether the home has a full-time activity coordinator
  • Whether the residents have access to community health services
  • Whether the team holds regular meetings with relatives

Palliative care can be funded by the NHS, charitable organisations or privately. You may have to self-fund your loved one’s care if they have sufficient savings or assets.

At Ashbrook Court we work with Eldercare Solutions who are regulated, independent care fees planning specialists. Their advisers are Later Life Accredited through the Society of Later Life Advisers (SOLLA) and are able to provide independent advice on what the options are for funding long-term care. Making Dreams Come True

Our Wishing Tree initiative runs throughout the year to create memorable experiences for our residents and their loved ones to treasure. We believe it’s never too late to fulfil long-held dreams, and encourage everyone to participate.  Often, it’s the little things that mean the most, from watching the ballet for Georgette, a former Paris-trained dancer, to cheering on their favourite football team on home soil, for lifelong Orient fans Peter and Joseph. No matter how big or small, we love the opportunity to create these special moments for everyone in our care and those closest to them.

Make a Wish  Experiences to Treasure

Joe

Words of Love

Joe always dreamed of writing to his daughter. With our unwavering support, he finally did. Fulfilling a lifelong dream and creating a truly unforgettable family moment.

Joseph & Peter

Football Dreams

Leyton Orient fans Joseph and Peter returned to the stadium after many years away. Peter said “It brought back so many memories experiencing the thrill of a match again!”

Ron

Full Steam Ahead

Dear Ron was a huge train enthusiast, so it was our absolute pleasure to reunite him with the miniature steam locomotive he built from scratch more than 50 years ago!
